About California's Proposition 65

You may have seen a label that reads:

“WARNING: This product contains chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm.”

This warning appears on everything from restaurants and jewelry to automobiles and furniture. Here’s what it means — and why you may see it on our products.

What Is Proposition 65?

Proposition 65 became California law in 1986 with the original goal of protecting the state’s drinking water from chemical contamination.

Since then, the law has expanded significantly. Today, it includes over 800 listed substances — many of which are commonly found in everyday materials such as brass, PVC, and other widely used components.

The law requires businesses to provide a warning if a product contains any listed substance above very specific thresholds.
